In 1958 Colombian coffee burst into the public consciousness. Leading the charge? Juan Valdez with his faithful burro. Thanks to the mass appeal of this fictional farmer and a concerted effort by the National Coffee Federation of Colombia, the origin is still one of the first that people think of when asked: “Where does coffee come from?” Cauca sits in the southwestern part of the country, and produces some of the most vivid examples of what is exciting about this origin. With high altitudes and skillful production practices it’s hard to imagine that these coffees wouldn’t have made it down the mountain with or without the help of Señor Valdez.
